Getting in Vienna

Vienna has excellent connections to the rest of Europe, regardless of the means of transportation you are going to use. You can get to Vienna by plane, by car, by train, by bus and even by boat.

Vienna has one international airport, located about 18 km away from the city. The airport is called Wien Schwechat and is very well connected to the city. You can get to the city center by train (S-Bahn), bus, taxi or shuttle from the hotel. The train is very convenient and pretty fast. The regular S-Bahn will get you to the city center in less than half an hour. There is a fast train called CAT (City Airport Train) that doesn't stop in any station until the city center, that takes about 16 minutes to get there, but it is more expensive than the regular train. A taxi ride to the city is about €30.

Driving and parking in Vienna

Vienna has excellent roads and a good traffic management, but it may become crowded as any other large city, especially during rush hours. The rush hours are tipically in the morning and in early evening. Traffic is more crowded in the city center (withing the central ring), where streets are narrower and mostly one-way.

Drivers in Vienna are generally skilled. However, they are not very willing to wait if you are not sure about the place you are going to. Having license plates from another country might help, as they will understand you are a tourist.

Tram in ViennaVienna has a very good public transport network. As a tourist, you will use mostly the underground, since this will take you to all important landmarks. In addition to the underground, you can also use trams, buses and trains.

Public transport in Vienna works mostly on the honor system. Fares are reasonable for the excellent conditions. Spot checks are performed from time to time and you will get a fine if you don't have a ticket. Tickets that you buy must be validated on the platform for underground or in the tram or bus. You can get your tickets from automatic machines in stations that accept cash and credit cards. Some stations also have counters. If there seems to be no place for you to buy tickets, try at the nearest tobacco shop. As a tourist, you may be interested in the Vienna Card, that provides both free transport and discounts for some landmarks.
