Getting in Vienna

Vienna has excellent connections to the rest of Europe, regardless of the means of transportation you are going to use. You can get to Vienna by plane, by car, by train, by bus and even by boat.

Vienna has one international airport, located about 18 km away from the city. The airport is called Wien Schwechat and is very well connected to the city. You can get to the city center by train (S-Bahn), bus, taxi or shuttle from the hotel. The train is very convenient and pretty fast. The regular S-Bahn will get you to the city center in less than half an hour. There is a fast train called CAT (City Airport Train) that doesn't stop in any station until the city center, that takes about 16 minutes to get there, but it is more expensive than the regular train. A taxi ride to the city is about €30.

An interesting option to get to Vienna is the airport in Bratislava. It is only 54 km away from the Austrian capital. There are good connections to Vienna during the day, including train and bus. However, it is not that easy to get to or from the airport during the night, when the only option is to take a taxi.

Vienna is very well connected to main cities in Austria and in neighboring countries by motorways. Getting to the city by car is very easy. As in any major city, traffic can be seriously jammed during rush hours. It is always good to avoid driving to or from the city in the morning or in the evening. Austrians like to spend their weekend away from the city, so you will see lots of cars getting out of Vienna on Friday evening and returning on Sunday evening.

Austria has an excellent train network, so it is very easy to get to Vienna by train. Vienna has many train stations and all of them are easy to recognize, since the name starts with "Wien". Most countries nearby with well developed railroad also have good connections to Vienna.

It is also possible to get to and from Vienna by bus. Buses are reliable, but trains should always be preffered, since they are faster and usually more comfortable. You will need to take a bus though if you travel to towns or villages with no railway link. Buses are also very popular for international travel, especially to and from Eastern European or Balkan countries. There are a huge number of companies that operate international routes, you will need to find one based on your destination.

Vienna is situated on river Danube, so it is possible to come here by boat. Trips from Bratislava, Budapest or Linz are common. Such trips are just for leisure, since the boat is slower than the train, car or plane. Sailing on the Danube might be a very unique experience, the sights are very picturesque.
