Berlin is very well connected to the rest of Germany and other European cities by plane, car, train or bus. It has two airports, four main train stations and a good but crowded ring road.
The main airport is Tegel International Airport. Unlike other big airports, it is not connected by rail to the city. The only options are buses and taxis. Buses can take you either to the city center or to some very close underground stations (Jakob-Kaiser Platz or Kurt-Schumacher Platz). Once you get into the underground, you can reach virtually any place in Berlin very easy. Berlin is well known for its excellent underground network.
Schönefeld is the second airport that serves the German capital. It is used more by low-cost than flag carriers. The airport is very well connected to the city by train (S-Bahn). The S-Bahn will get you to the center pretty quickly. Taxis and some bus services will also get you to the city.
Germans are passionate car owners, so the motorway infrastructure around Berlin is very good. The ring road is made up of several motorway segments and is called Berliner Ring. It may get crowded during rush hours. Once in Berlin, you will find once again an excellent road network. Traffic jams are not so frequent as in other capital cities. Berlin has a low emission zone. You will need to buy an inexpensive sticker and put it in your windshield in order to show how much your car is polluting. Some older cars are not allowed within this zone. Train services are very popular and extremely reliable in Germany. Berlin has good connections to other cities within Germany and within the whole Europe. There are more train stations in Berlin, but they are connected to each other by S-Bahn, so it is easy to transfer. These stations are: Hauptbahnhof, Südkreuz, Ostbahnhof and Zoologisher Garten. The first is the main station and has an impressive new building.
Bus travel is not very popular within Germany, since the rail network is so good. International bus routes are popular though. The international bus station is called Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof and is located in Charlottenburg. You can further take the S-Bahn to get in the city.
