Getting in Mallorca

Mallorca is accessible by plane or by boat. Most tourists arrive by plane, because the island is not close enough to the Spanish mainland to make the boat a good option. It is possible however to arrive there by boat from another Balearic island.

Mallorca has a single airport close to the island’s major city, Palma de Mallorca. The airport, called Sant Joan, is busy almost all the time, and especially during summer. It is actually bigger than many European airports serving large cities. More than 20 million passengers are travelling each year to and from Palma de Mallorca airport.

Once in the airport, you have multiple options to reach your resort. Many tourists rent a car, because the island is quite large and many attractions can be only reached by car. There are plenty of car rental companies in the airport, both the well known international ones and some local companies. Some of the local ones might be a little bit cheaper and therefore you will see long queues at their desks. If you plan to rent a car, it’s best to do it in advance in order to compare offers and select the best one. The motorway is easily accessible from the airport and then you can either follow the signs or use your navigation device to get to the destination.

Public transportation is a very good option too. There are very few resorts that you can reach with a direct bus from the airport, so you will probably need to get to Palma de Mallorca first. Line 1 runs between the airport and the city. It is very frequent and operates from early morning to late night, which makes it a very good option. You should go with it to Estacio Intermodal, because that’s where most of the buses arrive and depart from. Once you are in this main station, it’s easy to see where the buses are going and to pick the right one. You can generally buy your ticket from the bus driver.

Taxis are plentiful if you prefer one, however they are not cheap. The distance between Palma de Mallorca airport and your resort can be quite long, which will result into an expensive trip.

Palma de Mallorca is also the entry point if you arrive by sea. Most of the ferries from the other Balearic Islands or even from the Spanish mainland (Barcelona, Valencia) arrive there. Mallorca has another port in Alcudia, where ferries from Menorca arrive.
